The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett, is about a girl, Mary Lennox, who has spent most of her childhood in India. When her parents die of a mysterious illnes, Mary is sent to England to stay with her uncle, whom she's never seen or met before. At Misselthwait Manor, a gloomy old house on the Yorkshire moors, Mary stumbles upon a garden that's locked up. "It was the sweetest, most mysterious-looking place any one could imagine. The high walls which shut it in were covered with the leafless stems of roses which were so thick, that they matted together.... 'No wonder it is still,' Mary whispered. 'I am the first person who has spoken here for ten years.'"
She also discovers her cousin Colin, who is thought to be so sickly, that he is forbidden to get out of bed or step out of his room. Mary is an adventurous and stubborn girl. She somehow finds the key to the secret garden and spends many enchanted hours there. She also introduces Colin to the exhilaration of fresh air and the beauties of nature. The garden becomes the pivot of their young lives. A working-class boy called Dickon helps Mary rejuvenate the garden. As the flowers bloom once more, Mary and Colin are transformed, both in health and spirit.
Frances Hodgson Burnett, an English writer whose family immigrated to the U.S. when she was fifteen, wrote this book in 1911. Along with her other book, Little Lord Fauntleroy, it is a classic, loved by children of all ages, even after 85 years. Burnett died in 1924
