The small country of Swaziland (it is about the size of Nagaland) is surrounded by the Republic of South Africa on three sides and Mozambique on the east.
Swaziland was formerly a British protectorate. It became independent in 1968 as the kingdom of Swaziland and is now ruled by a king, one of the last, in Africa.
In Swaziland, cattle are a measure of a man’s wealth and standing society. But the country is rich in mineral reserves, especially asbestos, iron and coal.
Europeans and people of European-Africa ancestry number only around 8000 in a total population of about 8,20,000.
However, the Europeans own nearly half the land and grow much of the cash crops, including cotton, tobacco and sugar. They also own most of the mines and forest land.
Mbabane is the administrative capital of Swaziland.
