Commonwealth of Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico is an island that lies between the United States and South America.
Spain took possession of it in 1508 and it remained in Spanish hands over the next few centuries till 1898 when Spain and the United States went to war. Spain lost and ceded the territories of Puerto Rico, Guam and Cuba to the victor.
Cuba became independent soon afterwards but Puerto Rico and Guam remained with the USA.
Spain had installed a local government just before the war and the Puerto Ricans continued to rule themselves even after the change of ownership. They were granted U.S. citizenship in 1917, but self-rule continued and continues to this day. Puerto Ricans are not eligible to vote in U.S. presidential elections and they do not pay income tax to the U.S. government.
There is a movement for full independence, but there is another movement that seeks to incorporate Puerto Rico with the USA, as one of its states. However, in a referendum held in 1967 Puerto Ricans rejected both these ideas and voted to continue as a commonwealth of the USA.

Most people are of Spanish descent, so Spanish is the main language.
Most of the people are Roman Catholics.
San Juan is the capital and largest city.
