It became independent from Ethiopia in May 1993 after a three-decade long war of independence which left it shattered and impoverished.
The chief occupations of the people is cultivation and pastoralism. Valuable potash deposits and possible gold, iron and oil, are the country’s natural resources but exploration and exploitation have been hindered by war.
The new country is grappling with the massive task of resettling people uprooted by war and famine.

Dimdima.com, the Children's Website of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan launched in 2000 and came out with a Printed version of Dimdima Magazine in 2004. At present the Printed Version have more than 35,000 subscribers from India and Abroad.
