|
Sri Narayana Guru was a rare combination of saint and social reformer.
In one of his messages to his disciples, Sri Narayana Guru said:
Inform the people about the general principles of religion and propagate faith in God.
Strive among the people to achieve external
and internal cleanliness or the threefold cleanliness (of thought, word and deed).
Speak to the people about non-violence, love and unity and make them
observe these principles.
Select and train suitable young men and
send out the best and willing among them as monks to work for the good of others.
This message sums up Sri Narayana Guru's life and work. |

Sri Narayana Guru led the movement against caste oppression in Kerala. In 1903 he founded the Sri Narayana Dharma Paripalana Yogam(SNDP) to carry on the work of social reform, the awakening of oppressed castes and to promote among the people fraternity without distinctions of caste and religion.

Narayana guru visited Ramana at his hermitage, his comments a rare diamond, like Ramana adorns the hill of Arunachala.. Ramana greeted him in malayalam. In his last days of Guru Narayana, Ramana sent him his attendant kunjuswamy to attend on his needs. The world today is wired, but then India is still steeped in casteism the political vote bank, wish our politicians are taken to the ashram and educated on the high ideals of Narayana Guru.

Sree Narayana Guru was a great Saint & Social Reformer, who always stood for one caste, one religion, one God for man. Whatever may be the religion of a man, it is enough if he becomes virtuos. Ask not, Say not Think not caste.

Early education
Sree narayana guru's first teacher was his own father, Madan Asan. He had formal schooling in the village school of Chempazhanthy Pillai. Apart from Malayalam and Tamil he learned by heart, as was the practice in those days, Sidharupa, Balaprabodhana and Amrakosa. He was blessed with a penetrating understanding and a sharp memory from very early childhood. Although there were a few schools in Travancore and Cochin in those days, Nanu's circumstances were such that he had to satisfy himself with what he received from his father, his uncle Krishnan Vaidyar and the village school master.

Whoever saw Gurudevan in his lifetime, everybody saw divinity. Mahatma Gandhi and Rabindranath Tagore said that they have never seen such a divinely sadhu anywhere in the world. Mahakavi Kumaran Asan saw his god in the Guru. No saint in the world who is equal to Sree Narayana Guru. Guru wrote hundreds of poems in Malayalam, Sanskrit, and Tamil. Most of them are equal to Upanishad. Sri K. Surendran's Novel "GURU" is a very good narration of the life of Sree Narayana Gurudevan.

Sree Narayana Guru was a magnifiscent personality from Kerala. The number of books written on him is the highest in Kerala. The number of essays on Guru is also the highest. He was selected unanimously as the greatest malayali in the last century & probably in coming centuries too. He had the amasing ability to link the apparently opposite philosophies.

The purpose of life, after all, is to live it, to taste experience to the most, to reach out eagerly and without fear for newer and richer experience. Love, compassion,self-confidence and sacrifice are the human qualities. Lead us from untruth to truth, From ignorance to knowledge From death to immortality.

Sree Narayana Guru was born under the star 'Chathayam' in the month of 'Chingam' in 1856 AD (1032 of the Malayalam calendar) in the village of Chempazhanthi in Trivandrum, the capital of Kerala as the son of Madan Asan, a farmer, and Kutti Amma. Yet Gurudev reportedly told some of his followers that he was actually born in 1030. When his 60th birth anniversary was being celebrated 1916 he laughingly said "my 60th birthday (sashtabhdhapoorty) was quite a while ago.
