The caracal is best-known as a hunter of dazzling speed, agility and balance. It is related to the lynx. It can hurl itself several metres off the ground to snatch small birds from the air. It is able to change the direction of the paws when it leaps and is swift enough to catch several birds at one go.
The caracal is a medium-sized wild cat with long pointed ears. The ears are tipped with tufts of black hair. The caracal is found in India,West Asia and Africa. This most handsome of cats has reddish-brown fur and an elegant gait. The female caracal gives birth to 2-4 cubs in a den made in the hollow of a tree or a rock crevice.
When young the cubs make distinct chirping sounds like birds!
The caracal is not to be confused with caracul, a commonly used fur that comes from the karakul, a kind of Asiatic sheep.
