The lyre tail fish is a small fresh water fish, barely 7cm in length. It lives in ditches and small pools, whose water invariably dries out in summer. Though the fish dies in the absence of water, the species does not die out as the fish's eggs are deposited in the mud and hatch only at the onset of the monsoons, when water fills up the pool or ditch.
The fish gets its name from its tail, which is shaped like a lyre. The tail has brilliant markings on it making it a popular fish in aquariums. But it is only the male who looks dashing; the female has a rounded tail and is rather drab looking.
The lyre tail fish is found in tropical west Africa.
