The rabbit-eared bandicoot is found only in a few isolated pockets of central Australia. It has been chosen by the Australian government as a mascot representing all endangered species in the country.
A ground-dwelling marsupial with a long pointed head, the bilby, as it is known locally, has silky bluish-grey fur and a long black tail with a white brush-like tip. Like its cousin, the kangaroo, it has sturdy hind legs for hopping. Its forefeet are adapted for digging, with strong claws on the second, third, and fourth toes.
It lives in deep spiral burrows during the day, venturing out only at night to dig for seeds, bulbs, fruit and fungi, or to seek out insects and lizards with its pointed snout and long tongue.
It hardly needs to drink any water, sustaining itself on the moisture in the food.
