Rats are rodents and so are squirrels, but the largest rodent in Asia is the porcupine.
There are three species in India. The largest of these and the most widespread is the Crested porcupine found all over the subcontinent in a variety of climes.
It lives in burrows and comes out only at night, when it feeds on vegetable matter of all sorts, but especially the bark of trees, roots, fruits and grain.
Its hair is modified into sharp spines that can cause fearful damage. It drives the spines into the victim by running backwards. This makes even big predators, like tigers, wary of the animal. However, it sometimes falls prey to panthers and jackals. Another enemy is man. There are many people who relish its flesh.
