JALSWARAJ IN RALEGAN SIDDHI

By Bhakti Sarda (VII B)

Raleagan Siddhi is a village in Parner taluka of Ahmednagar district, Maharashtra state in western India. In 1975 the village was affected by drought. The village tank could not hold water as the embankment dam wall leaked. The villagers were going miles away to fetch water. The farmers could not grow crops in their fields without water. There was no ray of hope to change this serious situation. The transformation took place when a retired army driver named Anna Hazare settled in the village.
Anna Hazare gathered and encouraged the villagers and made them understand the value of labour and natural capital. Ralegan is located in the foothills, so Hazare persuaded the villagers to construct watershed embankment and allow it to percolate and increase the ground level. These efforts solved the problem of water scarcity in the village and made irrigation possible. When Anna Hazare came in Ralegan Siddhi in 1975 only 70 acres of land was irrigated, Hazare converted it into about 2500 acres. In this way Ralegan Siddhi got Jalswaraj in true sense because of the great vision of Anna Hazare.

Dimdima is the Sanskrit word for ‘drumbeat’. In olden days, victory in battle was heralded by the beat of drums or any important news to be conveyed to the people used to be accompanied with drumbeats.
