A Students Life

School life is one of the most important periods in the life of man.
It is also the most dreadful. This is because the educational system in India is based solely on marks and is very competitive.
In olden days `exams' were held to help the teacher know how far a student has understood the subject. Now, they are held to test how far a students can remember the notes by by-hearting it.
There is no value for the student who has understood the subject.
Value is given only to the student who is able to reproduce the answer word-by-word.
The present day educational system exerts a great pressure on the students.
The teachers and parents aid in increasing the pressure. Teachers give us loads of homework simply because `writing twice is equal to reading ten times' .
It is true but how can a child complete the homework in all five subjects in one day?
Parents want to live their life through us.
They send us to dozen classes just because they were not able to learn dance & music, swimming & karate. Just because they didn't learn it, it doesn't mean that we have to learn it in their place. They want us to excel in all aspects. They also compare us to other students.
The usual dialogues in majority of the house are " Mr. X's daughter has scored 98.64% and you have just scored 97.03% !
When will you learn to get good marks?" and "You have scored 100% in mathematics? Big deal! Even an L.K.G child would get full marks with such an easy question paper."
They don't realize that by saying such things they discourage the child. If you get, 90% you are regarded as a `dull student' and sent to tuitions.
When you come to tenth standard, it does not mean that you should always keep your head inside the book. Tenth standard students are also human beings. They also have the same feelings as others. They also need a break from their work. Too much reading can affect your brain too. When the brain is not able to store all the information fed into it, it stops storing more data. This again leads to `poor' marks in the exams.
Many scholars have said that the Indian educational system is the best in the world.
What we students say is with minor changes in the system, it can be the system that is both educational and exerts less pressure on the students.

Dear Suprema,  I don't agree with you. I absolutely like school. There are two advantages, you get o make a lot of friends and you can come to know of many things through studies.

When the brain is not able to store all the information fed into it, it stops storing more data". I don't agree with this concept. The brain is made of such a thing which never says insufficient memory. It depends on how much concentration you give. If you study for long time you may loose your concentration.  Again concentration can be improved.

Suprema Raj, I agree with you. What you have written about the present Educational System is absolutely right and to the point. Its high time now and the Education Board should make some changes. A little help from parents is also required. They too should not exert pressure on their children regarding studies. They should accept their children as they are and allow them to choose the field which they aspire to excel and progress.

Suprema Raj speaks of the pressures to perform that is placed on every child, making them miss out on the joys of childhood.

I don't agree with Suprema Raj's comment "parents want to live their life through us. That is why they are sending us to different classes like dance, karate etc". In my school days I never got a chance to learn dance but I am sending my daughter to dance classes. Why? I don't want them to miss their chance to learn something new. Later they should not blame us for not giving them a chance to learn. I want them to learn and it is up to them whether they want to master that field or not.

Yes, I agree with Suprema Raj. What she says about our educational system is correct. Emphasis is given only on learning by-heart the whole textbook.

Yes, Suprema, I like and agree with what you have written. Really teachers just tell us to learn and not understand .Only a few teachers do.

Sup, I disagree. Of course today a child suffers from excess tension. But the competition is so much we cannot help it. My bio teacher has said and I find it correct- Evolution is still going on. Brain is getting more powerful everyday.

I dont agree with you as we can make a lot of friends in school and I totally disagree with you that our parents want to live their life through us. Even my parent sent me for tennis classes but I more than enjoy it

I guess I have views differing yours. Indian education system, no doubt high, is so for our benefit. Compare an 8th standard Indian student with an 8th standard American one and you shall know what I mean. What our student life lacks is emphasis on physical development.

I dont totally agree with you. The brain can take in how much EVER you give it.....but it is true that there is too much pressure.......parents send us for tutions to improve our school marks and then tell us to study and prepare ourselves for the tutions. How on earth are we supposed to study for school subject and tutions

Yes, I agree with you but I also think that school helps us to build our personality and make friends. So, apart from studies there is a lot of fun in a student's life.

yes ,I do agree with suprema raj. Nowadays school has become more of a stress and it has become a necessity rather than enjoyment and a source of education.
