Nature’s Needles

Underground caves sometimes have a curtain of stalactites hanging down from the roof and joining up with stalagmites growing up from the ground.
Stalactites are formed when water saturated with limestone drips down from the roof of the cave.
Each drop of water deposits a little limestone before dropping down. When it splatters on the floor it deposits a little limestone there too. The accumulation of these deposits of limestone over a period of time produces icicle-like projections which when they hang from the ceiling are called stalactites and when they rise up from the floor, stalagmites. In some caverns these natural needles present an awesome sight.
