The British Museum in London is one of the oldest of the great national museums. Its collection in many fields is among the finest in the world. The museum was founded in 1753 by an Act of Parliament after Sir Hans Sloane, a British doctor and botanist, willed his collections to the nation. The Museum opened in 1759 in London's West End. Since then several additional buildings have been built around the original Montagu House. The Museum specialises in the history of Mediterranean civilizations and medieval Europe. The museum also has important relics of the Aztec empire and of ancient Mesopotamian cities like Ur and Nineveh. The book Das Kapital was written by Karl Marx, within the immense precincts of the British Museum.
