Some dismiss it scornfully as just another tower with nothing to distinguish it from similar towers all over Asia; others regard it as the most perfect specimen of tower architecture and rate it among the world's finest monuments. But whatever its architectural merits or demerits the Qutab Minar is one of our most durable structures. The magnificient monument has remained standing for eight centuries , even surviving an earthquake. The Qutab Minar was begun in 1199 by Qutb-ud-Din Aibak to mark his victory in India. But he got no further than the first balcony and it was completed by his successors. The gracefully tapering 5-storeyed tower soaring into an awesome height of 73 metres is the tallest stone structure in our country.
