TALES FROM READERS

The Mystery of Twin Town

"Hey Sam, what are you doing" Cody asked his younger brother, Sam.
"Cody, I was just thinking if you could tell me more about a state in India called Kerala. You see, there's this pair of twin Indian girls in my class who are from Kerala and they often talk about some 'Twin Town' in their state. I have no idea what they talk about." said Sam clueless.
"Oh wow! This seems interesting Sam. Let's ask granny who often reads about mysterious India." said Cody curiously.
And the two children walked to granny's room.
'Granny Granny - can you tell us the story behind this 'Twin Town' in India, we want to know more.' asked the curious kids.
'Aah...You want to know about the place called Kodinhi, a town in Kerala, which has more than 220 pairs of twins. It's a peculiar town I tell you.' said granny, an old woman in her eighties, her fair face wrinkled with fine lines, her silver hair tied in a neat bun. Her eyes were shining bright now; talking about the mystic India was so much fun.
'Come sit', said granny, as she started.
'Once upon a time, around 100 years ago, in the town of Kodinhi, lived women who were mature but used to fight a lot among themselves and disrupt the harmony of the town. All men and kids were fed up and tired of the behaviour of their wives and mothers. It was getting sad and quarrelsome day by day. The people in the town then noticed that their farms were getting dried up and the lands had started getting barren. They got really worried.
One day a sage visited the town and observed its sad state. He placed a huge mirror near the town's well and went away. In a few days time, the women at the well, often fighting and quarrelling, looked at the mirror and realised how ugly, irritated and funny they looked. The word spread slowly and they got self conscious.
One fine day, the women finally gathered up and sat by the mirror to discuss freely the matters of their heart, promising each other to not fight anymore and only spread harmony. This huge change made the town happy once again, the greenery spread, flowers bloomed and everyone rejoiced.
Once again the sage came and this time he took the mirror away with him, for the town didn't need it anymore.
But something happily strange started happening in a couple of months, every family started getting blessed with twins. The parents were more than happy with this blessing and gift from god. It's said that the twins were like a mirror to each other; they had their 'self-conscious' with them at all times in the form of each other. This made them morally the strongest of all the people in the surrounding villages and towns." finished granny.

Do You Know: The place called Kodinhi does exist in Kerala, India and is popularly known as The Twin Village. The village boasts of 220 pair of twins. The oldest known set of twins in this village was born in 1949. The exact cause of this phenomenon is unknown and still baffles the doctors.
