TALES FROM READERS

The Blind Beggar

Once upon a time there was a blind beggar in Baghdad. He used to beg near the king's palace. But whenever anybody gave him money he would ask the person to beat him. When the king came to know about it he summoned the beggar and asked him why he did so.
The beggar said he was once a rich and a greedy merchant. He would always pray for more wealth. One day as he was travelling in a desert along with his camels, he saw an old man dying of hunger. The old man asked him for food and the merchant shared his food with him. The old man blessed the merchant and granted him a wish. The merchant wished for more wealth. Lo! Suddenly a castle appeared and they both entered.
There they found gold, silver and diamonds. The merchant carried huge loads of the valuables on his camels but the old man took only a small bag-full. The merchant was so greedy that he wanted the bag also. When he asked the old man to give him the bag the castle disappeared. He also lost his eyesight. On the way, thieves looted him and he lost all his wealth.
He realized that God had taught him a lesson. He wanted to punish himself further. So he asked anyone who passed by to beat him. When the king heard his story he felt sad. He then touched the beggar and the latter regained his vision. The king was happy and he gave the beggar money.
