TALES FROM READERS

Jackal And Birds

Once upon a time a Jackal lived in burrow in a small hill. During the rainy season, the small hill was under water.
Jackal was worried about his food. He chalked out a plan. He went to another hill. There was a huge tree on the hill which many birds had made their home. The birds had a king who was old and simple minded.
The Jackal made his body muddy, so that he looked very exhausted and tired. He pretended to be hurt and stayed under the tree. One day, the king of the birds asked the jackal, "what happened to you?" The jackal said, "I saved an innocent baby bird, who was fighting for life in the flood. My friends got annoyed with me for saving the prey and asked me to leave them immediately." The King was happy with the Jackal and made him the protector of the birds.
The Jackal was very happy and everyday he made one baby bird as prey. One day the bird king asked the jackal "Why is my Kingdom losing baby birds everyday?" The jackal said, "It may be due to the flood which has almost touched the branches of the tree".
After a few days the king bird understood that the jackal had played a trick to get his prey. He once again asked the Jackal, "what happened to all the birds in my kingdom?" The jackal then said, "I have eaten all the birds. And now you are my victim." Saying so the Jackal pounced on the king and killed him.
