TALES FROM READERS

Bella, Billu And The Billi

Bella and her little brother Billu wanted to have ice cream. Bella was six years old and her brother Billu was barely three years old. Bella very well knew that there would an ice cream vendor standing at their colony gate, however her mother had never before let them venture out on their own. Today mom was busy as guests were expected at their home that evening.
Bella mustered up all the courage she could gather and went up to mom and asked for her permission to go. Mom had her hands full and it also looked that it would rain so she was in no mood to grant their wish. But the kids persisted, so she finally let Bella and Billu go out and fetch their treat. She explained to her older one to be careful and to take very good care of the little one too. The two kids stepped out with ten rupees in a hand and a little umbrella in the other, lest it started to rain. With a heavy heart mom let them go and warned them to be back as soon as they had eaten their treats. Bella took charge and she felt very responsible, mom had trusted her to take care of herself and her little brother. They quickly reached the vendor and purchased the ice-creams to their likings. They relished their priced goodies and were totally satisfied. On their way back it started raining suddenly. Bella quickly opened her umbrella and helped her brother with his. They were rushing back home when they heard a kitten's cry. Billu pointed to the little kitten and cried out "Didi, meow". Bella saw the kitten running for cover under a car. The poor little billi was soaked in water and Bella took pity on it. Bella promptly put her hand under the car and gently pulled out the frightened kitten. Bella and Billu took the kitten home to safety. Mom opened the door to find her little ones bravely holding another little one! Bella narrated all that happened and mom was very proud of her little girl. Mom fetched some milk and poured it out in a bowl, which Bella and Billu lovingly fed to the kitten. Bella was truly happy as her first excursion as a grownup had been a success! Mom looked heaven wards and uttered a silent prayer of thanks for the little angles in her life.
