TALES FROM READERS

Baby Tree Wants Ice Cream!

It was a hot summer afternoon. The road was busy and crowded with cars, vans, buses, people and many school children. On both sides of the road there stood tall, green, shady banyan trees. Among these was a Mother tree with her 3 year old baby tree. The baby tree was full of excitement seeing the road. Suddenly it spotted a boy eating 'something' and enjoying it. It was orange in colour and looked yummy. The boy was enjoying it while all others on the road were sweating in the heat!
The baby tree asked Mamma tree 'what is he eating?' Mamma tree laughed and replied ' Its an ice cream. They say it's cold and delicious. At once the baby tree began to shout 'I want to eat an ice cream!' The mother tree was worried. She replied 'Son, I cannot walk. How can I bring you an ice cream?! But the baby tree refused to listen and went on saying 'I want ice cream!' The mother tree felt helpless. But at once she had an idea.
She saw an old man walking close by with the help of a stick. She asked him' Sir, can you please help me. Can you please bring an ice cream for my son? The old man replied 'Sorry. I am too old and I cannot walk that long '.
Disappointed the mother tree now asked a lady who was walking along briskly with her little daughter 'Madam, can you please help me. Can you please bring an ice cream for my son?. The lady replied - 'I would have loved to help. But my daughter is getting late for school.' Now the baby tree began to cry and the mother tree was worried.
Just then a small boy came over and said to the baby tree' Hello Tree ' My name is Abhimanyu. Why are you crying? . The baby tree replied ' I want an ice cream! 'Abhimanyu was amused. He asked Mamma Tree ' Aunty, why don't you bring ice cream for the baby? Well 'I cannot walk. How can I go to the shop to bring ice cream?' replied the Mamma tree. Abhimanyu replied - I will be back soon. And he walked away.
He went home and told his elder sister - 'Malu didi the baby tree wants ice cream. Mamma tree cannot walk. Can we help them?' The ever helpful Malivai at once replied 'Of course. Let's take money from our piggy bank. She promptly took some money from the box and off they went to the ice cream shop. Soon they reached the trees. The baby tree was very sad by now. The kids walked up to the baby tree and pulled out an orange candy from the bag and said 'here is your ice cream!' The baby tree was thrilled. He gladly took the same and began to slurp it! The kids gave a candy to Mother tree and ate one each too! All four enjoyed their ice creams and felt cool on a hot summer. The mother tree thanked the helpful kids. The baby tree was happy too and said thank you to his new friends.
Malivai and Abimanyu walked home happily to share the story with their mother.
