Consumer Exploitation
Now a days the sellers and traders are selling defective goods at a very high rate. We should raise voice against this problem or not?
Started on  28-Jun-2004  By  Tushar Gupta   E-mail : Tushar_SOS@yahoo.com
RADHIKA

Well I think this is very true that sellers and traders are selling defective goods at a very high rate which decreases the quality but increases the quantity. Now for their profit they have started to add harmful adulterants which is injurious to health. So I think consumer rights should be there.

AKSHAY

We should raise voice against this problem.

SUNDARAN

Very right we should raise voice against them so that it is going to be a lesson to others also.

PHILOMINA EKKA

They not only sell their goods at a high rate, nowadays they also resort to adulteration for more profit...stupid people, one day their family members will also suffer.

SRIKANTH

well,consumers nowadays get cheated easily.

SRIKANTH

well,consumers nowadays get cheated easily.

SHEFALI

Well I also think the same.

SHEFALI

Well I also think the same.

WHATEVER

yup. We've all got to make sure we're not cheated. I think the least we can do is check the expiry date and authenticity of the brand. If the consumers are smart there won't be any scope for exploitation! :)

SHARMILA

Now a days consumers are easily cheated by traders and sellers consumers consciousness towards their rights and the social legal obligations of the business and the government is very poor . The government enacted a consumer protection act in 1986. But there is no awareness among our citizens . To take measures or precautions to the people. Few awareness programmes to be held in rural areas if so these are followed by our government and also if the rights are followed by people these major problems will be solved slowly.

RIJU SHARMA

This discussion forum is great and also on the same side very helpful for the lay man to get to know about it. It is very good for students and for people who wants the information about it. In a nutshell I just want to convey my message to the head of this department that its great idea of making people aware of such exploitations of our country.

VERGHESE MATHEW

I feel consumers fall prey to aggressive advertisements done by some ad agencies like jump from top of a hill etc . although a notice of caution preceeds such ads viewers seldom read this caution as it is flashed for few seconds. It is with this kind of ads that defective goods are introduced in market. There is other side consumer should discourage these kind of customer exploitation which also include sale of goods that have expired expiry data and these case should be filed in consumer court for which every indian consumer should be knowledgeable of their right.

ADITHYA

Yes, definitely it is our responsibility to raise our voices against sellers who defect the goods.

JISA MERIN JOY N

I think nowadays, traders are imposing high prices even for every day items like onions. Mediocre people are being exploited by these cunning fellows. Even though the sellings are not good they are not ready to reduce the prices. They are really taking advantage of the helplessness of the people. We ,the people have to protest against this with the help of government.

RICHA

I think if anybody cheat any consumer then consumer has a right to voice against them in consumer court and try to spread awareness everywhere so that every citizen can understand importance of consumer and can get aware if in country anybody will try to spread awareness, then I think our country has right to develop.

YUVAPREETHI

We should raise voice against this problem. They are really cheating us.

PRATEEK

Govt. should putup investigation policies for the goods manufactured & transported to retailers.

KANISHKA

I think that with the competition in the market, shopkeepers want to increase their profit. So,they use the method of deteriorating the quality of food by mixing adulterants in it. Consumer should raise their voice against it & spread the idea of consumer awareness.

ABHISHEK

First & the most important thing is that the consumer should be aware about his rights& duties so that he can raise his voice against traders & sellers if cheated. Nowadays we see that many products are available in the market by which the purchaser gets confused ,so we should be aware about duties so that we can ask for the information of the product & purchase it. I request everybody to know about consumer rights & duties so that they are not exploited by sellers & traders in future.

ANIRUDH

Yes we should really raise our voices against those who sell us defective stuff.

M.VIJAYALAKSHMI

I strongly feel that we ,consumers are being exploited by the sellers. We,the citizens of our country must do something about it. Some sellers sell their goods which have passed their expiry dates, whereas some increase the M.R.P.rate, some contaminate them. This cannot be tolerated. Helpless people largely get affected. We must approach the court bravely.

VINAY AGARWAL

Nowadays the sellers and traders are selling defective goods at a very high rate. We should raise voice against this problem.

SKY_ICE4U

Consumers are seriously being cheated. All traders try to fool them. This is really bad for our country. We must go to consumer courts and give these traders serious punishments. Only then will they be fair.

HARSHIT CHAWLA

We should all raise our voice against this exploitation.

VARUN DIXIT

What I think is that now that we know that we are getting cheated so its easy for us to choose what's good and what's not.And I am working on my school project which is based on consumer awareness. And what I think we should form an organization of our own. We know our rights we should make others aware of these rights.

SRAAVYA PATHSAMATLA

Hi! I think that apart from producers the consumers are also to be blamed for buying the goods blindly without any consciousness. I advice on my behalf that apart from producers firstly consumer awareness should spread in the CONSUMERS to avoid their exploitation!

SAMEER SHARMA

Well I strongly believe our consumer forum should be made powerful especially in terms or appliances because large amount of people are not aware of the after sale sevices , operating system, benefit of the seasons , guaranty, warranty. With the help of this forum people can file their grievances and get benefitted. Thus people are educated about there right to fight.

POOJA

I think we should raise voice against the consumer exploitation. The sellers are doing this for their profit. But this is injurious to our health. Now its time to take action against these sellers and also make the consumers aware of consumers Rights and Duties.

KSHAMA

I feel we can do a little to fight against consumer exploitation by doing certain small things like checking the expiry date, checking for the ISI mark and always make sure that we get the bill for anything we buy. These are small things which if we keep in our minds we can save ourselves {consumers} from being exploited.

RAHIL THE GREAT

The consumers have to take the responsibility in their own hands. They need not blame the profiteering marketers and sellers for their troubles.

B CHANDAN KUMAR

IF YOU ARE INTRESTED IN KNOWING ANYTHING ABOUT SILK YOU MAY SEND YOUR QUESTIONS. any way you must be aware of silk mark just introduced (2 years back) to protect the consumer as well as the genuine traders of silk products like sarees and other silk products. B CHANDAN KUMAR

SHANU

I think we should raise our voice aganst this serious crime as it can effect ones health and also play with one's life.

HARITHA

Well we really should raise our voice against this. But don't you think that other measures such as awareness for the poor and illiterate too shoild be given. Moreover the government should implement strict laws.

RADHIKA

Consumers should be united and should raise their voice against this exploitation together.

SHUBHAM

With the growing needs and demands today things are available in huge quantities. Business -men make it a point to produce in huge quantities. Though we get quantity but quality is thing which we do not get. We should unite and raise the voices to give both us quality and quantity.

CHESHTA

Nowadays consumers are being so much exploited that they even suffer from lot of diseases especially in rural areas where people are not educated and they buy expired or opened packet after spending a lot of money. This should not be done and retailers fool these kind of people should be punished as this is a big offence.

SUSHANT

Thank you !!!!!! Please send some more information on this topic.

NIKHIL

I think the below mentioned are also the ways we consumers get exploited. How about these: 1. Under-weight and under-measurements 2. Sub-standard quality 3. High prices 4. Duplicate articles 5. Adulteration and Impurity 6. Lack of safety devices 7. Artificial scarcity 8. False or Incomplete information 9. Unsatisfactory after-sale services. 10. Rough behaviour and undue conditions

GITANSH KHIRBAT

I think that consumer should not be exploited by anyone. For this not only the govt. should take provisions, but the consumers should also be aware of their rights. Then only we can expect of a better India.

JAKE

We should raise our voice.

PANKAJAM DEVANANDAN

Of course consumers should raise their voice against a problem as serious as this. How would you like it if you were cheated? Consumer exploitation is no game, the producers are actually cheating people of their hard-earned money. It can also get dangerous when the producers sell items with false and incorrect information and the consumers later get hurt when they use these appliances. So, the govt. has to come up with schemes to stop consumer exploitation and also to educate people on the ways they get exploited, their rights, duties etc. It's high time we take this problem seriously and find a solution before it's too late.

THARIAN AUGUSTINE

we should strike against these trader or shopkeepers who do such stuffs and we should also do tit for tat to them like giving them less money than the required amount if they give us expired or low quality goods. We have the right to argue to them if they give us these types of adulterated stuffs.

CHANDNI

I stay in Dubai and have some questions regarding consumer awareness if someone could help me to answer these questions I will be grateful to you. Anyone who is staying in India. chandni_199@hotmail.com

HARLUVLEEN

I think the high prices is not the only way of consumer exploitation. There are other ways, through which consumers are getting exploitated, which should be taken seriously. The sub-standard quality of goods, duplicate articles, adulteration, unsatisfactory after sale service and rough behaviour and undue conditions.

NIKHIL

I feel that consumers themselves should be aware of the ongoing things.

VIKAS OBEROI

Yes ,we have to raise our vocie against this because if this thing will not be stopped then more and more people get affected by it and there will be profit only for manufacturers and traders..

VIKAS

I feel it has to be stopped and govt. should give them punishment.

SAURABH

Well I also think the same.

SUNIT

I need some information on consumer exploitation can anyone please help me??

SIDHANT

Yeah mostly the private producers are the ones who are exploiting, as they want more profits. The best way to prevent this is consumer awareness.

SUNIT

Can anyone help me for a school project on consumer exploitation?

DEEPAK KHANDELWAL

I think its true the way given by chanakya. Every seller who cheats through wrong measuring should be punished by cutting equal mass of flesh of his body.

SANCHITA

This is avery common problem prevailing in India. The consumer should raise voice against their exploitation.

ANISHHALDIYA

Please help me. Tell me the ways in which the consumers are exploited. my email address is:- anishhaldiya@rediffmail.com

ROUNAK CHINDALIA

Please help me about consumer exploitation. Send me anything you guys have for my project. Thanks. Can anyone help me for a school project on consumer exploitation? The consumer should raise voice against their exploitation. We should all raise our voice against this exploitation. We've all got to make sure we're not cheated. I think the least we can do is check the expiry date and authenticity of the brand.

AMRITANSHU

I think more than raising the voice we should concentrate on spreading the awareness regarding this matter. People should know where such kind of activities are taking place. Consumers can't be harassed and the retailers should know it. Strict actions should be taken against the retailers who try to fraud consumers.

KAMALJOT SINGH

This Problem Is World Wide.

SHIVANI

Yes consumers are exploited in every possible way which might get small profits for the sellers however its a huge step backward for our country and consumers definitely should take some serious measures.

VIVEK

Are you an individual, a comman man who toils day and night, up and down to earn three meals a day? If yes then do you at times become depressed with a look of betrayl on ur face. If yes then I suppoose that you are doing your work very sincerely. But if anyone fools you by using your money i.e your hard earned money, our duty is to protest against this.

SIDDHARTH GAUR

Now a days it is an important fact about the sellers and traders that their cost of product is going beyond the level of normal person. In contrast ,there is many adverse effect of this problem. From normal people's point of view this increase in rate have caused great pressure on consumer mind during purchasing. Today ,the sellers are selling the goods in different manner, they have increased the quantity little bit inspite of which they earn more money from the consumer. Sometimes adulterated food is also supplied to the consumer. At the end this thing confirms that consumer be only be saved from expoitation when it is fully aware about the rights that they have.

NIKKI

Behind every greedy man is a greedy family. Yes,consumer exploitation is increasing day by day. Some action must be taken against it.

BONNY

This is a very common problem prevailing in India. The consumer should raise voice against their exploitation.

POOJA SACHDEVA

Well I think its not at all fair to do so because if something like this happens with us we'll be paying a hard one for it. So I feel that it's completely wrong.

JANET4958

Hi all! Keep up this great resource. We enjoyed visiting your website very much. Tomorrow I shall return again.

SUMIT RAJ SINGH NARWAR

This has now become a common problem. This is true that government cannot do any thing against it so we have to raise our voice.

SUMIT SINGH (CRPF PUBLIC SCHOOL)

We should take the traders to police for the . exploitation of consumers.

RANI

Exploitation has started long back, now it has become a root for each person's succees. So nothing can be done about this.

VARUN

These open discussions are of great use, as more and more people read these responses, they themselves become aware of these problems and can certainly help in spreading awareness about consumer exploitation.

SONA

Tell me about the consumer buying behaviour towards silk sarees.

JYOTHISH

Now a days it is an important fact about the sellers and traders that their cost of product is going beyond the level of normal person. In contrast, there is many adverse effect of this problem. JISHNURNAIR

As a consumer we have some rights. Inorder to get the rights we also have to follow some rules. We must check the quality expiry date etc... Also we musn't be quiet we must form associations and make all the people aware about our rights. We should raise voice against consumer exploitation.

VIZ

I quiet agree with Jishnu. As consumers we should be provided with rights so as to safeguard consumers. Along wih passing laws, the govt. should make a great effort in implementing the laws. We are not very successful in implementing them.

KAMAL

I agree with all of u guys. Plz, if anyone could send me a mail abt Consumer Awareness / Exploitation, I would be thankful to them. I have a project to do on this topic. I selected this as it sounded interesting to me.

EESHA

Well, I very well agree that consumers are exploited these days. They are cheated and given low quality products at higher rates. Consumers need to be aware of their rights and they should raise their voice in the consumer courts. This will prevent customer exploitation.

AISHWARYA INGH

It's very very true that we the consumers are exploited. We are given highly adultrated as well as defective goods which are worthless. I want the people of India to raise their voice against this exploitation.

MALLINNI

Yes, we shoud raise our voice against it,coz due to a heavy price rise our future generation will suffer.

MV SUBBARAO

Guys, ok on this theory. How many of us know about the consumer laws and protection mechanisams. Lot of awarness thru newspapers and media Advts makes us to understand. Govt should insist to advertise on this thru supermarket chains.

AKANSHA SETH

Consumers get exploited due to lack of awareness. You should always ask for a bill after a purchase. Just do this much and it will surely help. It serves as a proof of what you've brought and if its defective, you can drag the seller to consumer courts. Also, if he does not give you a bill, he won't pay govt. taxes. So you help the govt. too by getting the items billed.

UTSAV

I am making a project on this topic. I need some imformation regarding this topic! Please help me.

SAHDH

Exploitation is very bad. It should be prevented.

PAYAL MALIWAL

I think firstly all the consumer should take care of themselves. So no one can cheat them.

RITIKA

According to me, the people inorder to gain materialistic goal have stooped down to a very low level and this is one of the main reasons for consumer exploitation.

HARITMA SINGH

Being a consumer I would suggest we should raise voice against such a cheat business. This revolting approach of an ordinary consumer will over all have a large impact on the society, as a result more & more consumers will get aware of their consumer rights. Ultimately leaving behind the element of uncertainity common man will raise his voice against it. Even if the price of product involved will be very less.

REEMA

I think its really true. Sometimes the shopkeepers even insist us to buy the 3rd class product which is not right on their part. I think they should not cheat us as we always pay the rate to rate price. SO WHY THIS EXPLOITATION????????

RAJAT GARG

Consumer exploitation being a major problem today, should be dealt with seriously both by the government and the citizens(the consumers). It is not acceptable as it only adds to the numerous health problems faced by the people today. The increasing amount of environment degradation and consumer exploitation are two problems that have to be dealt seriously at any cost. I suggest that the NEW GEN should come forward in all fields of administration and legislation and take control of our and our coming generations future.

TANYA SHRMA

I completely agree with the above mentioned points as the vendors cheat the consumers by pasting a fake tag price on the orignal one and the consumer does not pay much attention to this.

ANKIT

Yes, we shoud raise our voice against it,coz due to a heavy price rise our future generation will suffer. Guys, ok on this theory. How many of us know about the consumer laws and protection mechanisams. Lot of awarness thru newspapers and media Advts makes us to understand. Also, if he does not give you a bill, he won't pay govt. taxes. So you help the govt. too by getting the items billed.

RAHUL

Yes, the above mentioned are totaly correct we should raise voice against this exploitation as soon as possible so that we are free from any threat of exploitation.

DIYA

I was doing a project for school when I came across this site. Thanks Tushar, for starting this enlightening discussion. I learnt a lot while obtaining the information I needed for my project. I dont even live in India but I am very upset about the increasing rate of consumer exploitation. If anyone could give me more information on this topic, I would appreciate if you could get in touch with me. My email id is: dcool_8792@hotmail.com

RISHIN R PATEL

Well i think today many sellers and manufacturers are selling low qulity products at high rates and exploiting many consumers. According to me, to tackle such sellers consumers should become aware of his rights, only if consumers are aware then only then such sellers can be taught a lesson. Government has brought consumer protection act 1986 to help consumer under which if any consumer is cheated, he can move to consumer redressal agency and can get compensation for malpractice of sellers and manufacturers.

VIMAL JEPH

Yes I agree with everyone.

HIMANI KAPILA

Yes I too think that consumer exploitation is increasing day by day but this will not stop until we all, the consumers are totally aware. so to control such exploitation first ask urself are u an awared consumer?

MOHD SHAFEEQ RAHMAN.P

It is true that most of the people are exploited due to various problem like illiteracy.

RENUKA

Well, I very well agree that consumers are exploited these days. They are cheated and given low quality products at higher rates. Consumers need to be aware of their rights and they should raise their voice in the consumer courts. This will prevent customer exploitation.

AMAL

I dont completely agree to your opinion. They too need to live

RAKESH

Here it begins: the great battle, the consumer vs the corporation. Aggressive marketing (bordering on exploitation) has always been one of the major ways to increase profits. It's been happening for many a decade, growing unchecked. There are many things consumers are not aware of, not just pertaining to costs of items and the composition of these products, but to the environmental impact caused in the production and transportation of such goods. When creating products, companies dump a lot of toxic compounds into environment where these products are made. Who will suffer? The people who live in the environment, and even the rest of the some 6 billion people who also reside on the planet. What causes this? I agree with Modh Rahman that illiteracy is a factor, but not the only one. The biggest problem (in Canada or the US at least) is that people don't care. No one is willing to pay the price for quality control, or for making sure people have a safe environment. Most people want cheap products, even though they contain toxic substances. Don't believe me? Ask around... see if anyone is willing to pay a few extra dollars for making sure that the guys over in mexico, or brazil, or bangladesh, or india, or any other country for that matter have a safe working area. Many people will either laugh, and say "Who cares?" or they feel guilty and maybe agree, but not really mean it. Something must be done... but the question is "What?" What can we do? For this purpose, for fighting injustice among corporations and governments alike, a non-governmental organization must be created. Our message must be spread amongst the people of the world, and such treachery must be abolished. I'm currently enrolled in the IB program, and I have to do a presentation for Theory of Knowledge, so I picked this as my topic :-). I also have to do community service hours, so I might start up a website or something similar to this one which will allow for mass education. If anyone is interested in helping out, you can email me at gudimella.rakesh@gmail.com. -Rakesh, from Canada

SHIKHA

Their are various ways in which consumers are being exploited eg. 1. adulteration - Pulses being mixed with small yellow stones, rice with white stones, milk with detergent, layer of wax on apples are some examples of adulteration and are very common now a days. 2. unfair trade practices when shopkeepers weigh less than what they should. 3. Traders add charges that were not mentioned before.
