The largest mango tree ever recorded grew in the village called Burail near the city of Chandigarh.
Its trunk measured 9.75 m in diameter and its canopy covered an area of 2,258 sq. m. It was called CHHAPPAR which means shelter. A large number of people could work comfortably in its shade in the hot afternoons. On an average it yielded 16.8 tonnes of mangoes each year.
Once when its crop, loaded in 21 carts, arrived at the Patiala fruit market, people thought it was the produce of some orchard. The magnificent tree was felled by lightning in 1955.
