The only mammal to have its spine outside its body is the potto from West Africa. It's strange that it should have such weaponry, as it is a gentle animal with no known enemies. The spinal column is inside the body, but the sharp bony spikes of each vertebrae project through a hole in the skin all down the back. If the potto ever finds itself in danger it doubles up so that the spikes forms a gleaming row of sharp teeth which is usually enough to scare any predator.
