The reticulated python at 10 m holds the record for length among the snakes of the world. Pythons are not venomous. The reticulated python stalks its prey stealthily and when it has seized it, it curls its body around it and squeezes until the prey is unable to breathe and dies of suffocation. The snake generally eats small animals such as rats, birds, mongooses and pigs. But one huge reticulated python caught in Malaysia was found to have swallowed a 14-year-old boy. In India the species is found only in the Nicobar Islands. The only other species of python found in our country is the Rock Python which grows to a maximum length of 6 metres.
