Spadefoot toads breed in temporary pools which may lack sufficient food supply. In such cases the toads have a bizarre way of feeding their offspring. The female lays a large number of small eggs that hatch into small tadpoles. Due to the lack of proper food these tadpoles do not survive. But before the tadpoles die, the female lays about ten large eggs which hatch into large tadpoles. These feed on the smaller tadpoles and reach maturity before the pool dries up.
