The water spider builds a small bell-shaped nest underwater. Then it rises to the surface and entraps a bubble of air round its hairy body. It then descends to its nest and releases the bubble into the nest. This process is repeated till the nest is filled with air. It can live off this air for some time. When the female lays her eggs, the eggs are laid in a silken bag that occupies the upper half of the nest. The young ones stay in the nest for a few weeks before dispersing to live independently. The water spider is found all over Europe and Asia.
